PORTRAITS OF DOROTHY AND THOMAS COWPER.
 

A pair of fine and highly decorative portraits of children from the Georgian period, from an artist in the circle of Nathaniel Dance (1735 - 1811) They are presented in fine carved and gilded oval period frames and they are ready to hang and enjoy.

Portrait of Thomas Cowper, aged thirteen, bust length, in a brown coat and a blue waistcoat with a black cravat; and Portrait of Dorothy Cowper, aged nine, bust length, in a yellow dress and blue shawl, with a black ribbon around her neck.

As social change in the 18th century transformed attitudes towards little ones, childhood became appreciated as a distinct phase of life and human development. Patrons began to commission artists, and the genre of ‘child portrait’ in British art, was established by attractive portraits such as these.
