Fine, large, and high quality oil on canvas of a skewbald horse in a stable. Signed G. Jackson. Pinxt and dated 1830 lower right.

A rare work by the celebrated artist G. Jackson, who was an animal painter in the classic English mould. His paintings are keenly observed and display an empathy with the subject matter. The style of this painting is lively and realistic with good depth of colour and attention to light and shade and the elegant skewbald horse is set against the mellow back drop of a stable with hay and blanket.

The genre of equestrian art exploded into activity in England in the 19th century and its popularity shows no signs of dimming. Such paintings frequently include the passionate activities of racing, steeplechasing, foxhunting, coaching and polo. It was also popular to depict a horse in its stable, and many other paintings (such as this) were produced along this theme.

Highly decorative and easy to place, this fine oil on canvas is ready to hang and enjoy in a fine gilt period style frame.
