Fine 18th century etching and engraving of Susannah at her bath being watched by the elders at left, by Carlo Antonio Porporati after the painting by Jean Baptiste Santerre.

Carlo Antonio Porporati (1741-1816) Classic line-engraver. b. Turin, sent with a pension by King of Sardinia to train in Paris in 1768 under J F Beauvarlet. Member of the Académie in 1773, in which year he returned to Turin as professor of engraving, where he died.

Jean Baptiste Santerre (1651 - 1717) Jean-Baptiste Santerre trained under François Lemaire and later Bon Boullogne and was accepted at the Académie Royale in 1704, presenting a Susannah and the Elders, now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 7836).  He was employed under the patronage of King Louis XIV of France who paid the artist a stipend and gave him lodgings in the Louvre.  He continued to receive prestigious commissions following the king’s death, and worked as peintre ordinaire to the Regent for the remainder of his career.
