A PAIR OF FLYING CUPIDON - 17TH CENTURY SANGUINE DRAWING BY NOEL COYPEL (1628-1707)
A fine and diminutive red chalk (sanguine) drawing depicting two winged putti in a graceful, interlocking pose. One figure leans toward the other, reaching towards a cluster of foliage or flowers.
The drawing's fluid execution and the anatomical roundness of the putti are hallmarks of the Coypel family's style. Antoine Coypel, was a master draughtsman who frequently used red chalk for his preliminary sketches of angels and cherubs. It allowed him to focus on the soft contours and dynamic movement, which enabled him to work out complex poses before transferring them to his monumental paintings at Versailles or the Palais Royal.
The quality of this pleasing drawing is evident. It is executed with soft, delicate contours that emphasise the movement and playful energy of the cavorting figures.
